First Aid and Sickness at School

All staff have a current first aid certificate.

The School has a one room sick bay which is monitored by support staff with current first aid certificates. As school staff act in loco parentis minor accidents are treated. Parents are contacted about anything that is considered serious including bumps to the head.

Please let the School Office know an emergency contact: name and telephone number of a relative, friend, or neighbour. Keep your details – address and phone numbers- up to date at the School Office.

Please let us know about any medical matters about your child, eg. allergies and medical conditions requiring medication.

Any medication that is to be given to your child by School staff, is bound by our Administration of Medication Policy and a medcine form must be completed and signed by parent/caregiver. Ask at the Office for this.

Mobile Dental Clinic

The mobile dental clinic comes to Colwill School during the year.

Pre-school children are eligible for treatment. The names of new entrants will be placed on the roll of the clinic on completion of a consent form obtained from the Dental Nurse. Children transferring from other schools within New Zealand who have already received treatment will be automatically placed on the clinic roll. Parents will be given regular information regarding the availability of this service through the school newsletter.

If your child needs to see the dental nurse urgently, please phone Westgate Dental 832 2116 to make an appointment.

SWIS Social Workers in Schools

Ellie is our Social Worker in our school – she is here on Thursdays and Fridays. Notes may be posted into her letterbox on her office door (look for the sequins!) or an appointment may be made through the Office.

Hearing Assessment and Guidance Service

The Audiometrist checks hearing every year, not only of new entrants, but also of pupils referred by teachers or parents.

Public Health Service

The Public Health Nurse and the School Doctor visit the school regularly to check on the health needs of our pupils and to talk with parents.

Speech Needs

Ministry of Education Speech Therapist visits the school periodically to assess speech needs of children referred by teachers or parents.

For some children corrective measures are recommended while for others further treatment is provided by the therapist.
